he basis for this piece is a simple denim jacket, size small, for which
I have chose a Far East theme. I have added fabric to the back of the
vest: first a piece of red Bingata, the fabric typical of the Southern
Japanese Islands. I bought the Bingata in Okinoerabu, a small fishing
village in the string of islands leading to Okinawa, off the
Southernmost coast of Japan. I also added a beautiful fabric with a
great Koi carp motif. What was needed then was a beaded border and some
large buttons to anchor the border to.The front of the vest is also
decorated with some appliqué fabric: a print of a Japanese garden scene
on a black background, and a print of geometrical forms in bright
colors on the pockets. I have added some touches of glass flower beads
here and there on the vest, some crystal accents on the front (flowers,
butterflies). On the yoke, I have stitched a stunning dragon of silver
and marcasite stones, half the band of an old watch. The dragon holds a
large bead in its paws and has a flourishing tail of beads.
On one of the front pockets, I have designed a motif of jade beads
around a focal jade dragon, while the other pockets sports a large
cinnabar bead with some intricate and colorful trimming.
Definitely a fun piece with some power to it, thanks to the dragon
heart of the vest.
