Music Lesson Skirt
his project transformed a stern black corduroy skirt (in a roomy size
8) into an eye-catching piece. The inspiration is far Eastern: I
selected a very large piece of Alexander Henry’s Zen Charmer fabric
that I cut very precisely according to its design details. I decided to
heat bond the piece before machine stitching it in a zigzag pattern for
added sturdiness. This is a very fantastic approach to Zen imagery as
the Geisha represented in the fabric charms a very large and
threatening snake with her music, while skulls illustrate the
impermanence of all things and large lotus flowers remind us of the
beauty of simplicity. This is a departure from my normal approach to
appliqué work, but I wanted added sturdiness to accommodate the lower
body movements (sitting, walking, driving etc…).
